As spring rolls around, so does the inevitable spring clean! Now if you're hitting the clean frenzy hard, you may be considering cleaning your jewellery. Experts have revealed the best ways to get your treasured jewels sparkling again. Some you may be expecting but others are bound to surprise you.

Jewellery should sparkle like the beacon of hope and beauty that they are, but how do you get your sparkle back? Our jewellery is susceptible to things like dust, dirt, lotions, soaps, sweat, air and moisture. All of which can tarnish and dull your favourite pieces over time.

Experts at the Diamond Factory, care deeply for the jewellery going out into the world. Not only for their upkeep but also their sourcing. All diamonds sold at Diamonds Factory are ethically chosen, crafted in-house and delivered straight to your door. Diamonds Factory boxes are specially designed to complement and protect the jewellery they house. The beautiful faux suede lining combined with the delicate gold details creates a luxurious packaging that will display the jewellery in the best possible way.

Ella Citron-Thompkins from Diamonds Factory is here to help debunk the most popular jewellery hacks and help you learn about caring for your gold, silver, and gemstone jewellery safely, ready for spring!

Onion Juice
I did warn you that some of these may surprise you! This hack has been on the rise on TikTok and consists of rubbing your tarnished gold jewellery with onion juice, waiting 15 minutes and washing it off.

Ella says, "This method does work; however, it can become quite messy and cause an unpleasant smell."

Maybe add rubber gloves to your shopping basket with that onion.

The Toothpaste Method
This hack involves adding a smidge of toothpaste to a cloth, rubbing your jewellery and washing it off. This method is a big no from Ella and one to avoid:

"Toothpaste is actually quite a hard substance; it is harder than some gemstones and can potentially damage your jewellery."

Boiling water and fairy liquid
An oldy but a goldy...pun intended. All this hack entails is adding your jewellery into the bowl with the boiling water and fairy liquid and leaving it to sit for an hour for best results.

Ella says, "Washing up liquid contains both detergent and disinfectant, so it cleans and kills germs at the same time. This is one of the gentlest ways to clean your jewellery. The item can soak in this solution, and then a soft bristle toothbrush can be used to clean the item.

Baking soda and hot water
Another simple method; add tinfoil, a tablespoon of baking soda and enough water to cover the ring in a pot and bring to the boil. Let it sit for five minutes and then you'll have your shine back. Although Ella suggests that this might not be the best solution: "this method can be abrasive, so it would not be my preferred choice".

So, back to the onions!

Bicarbonate soda and white vinegar
Much like the above, you add tinfoil to a bowl, lay your jewellery down, and add the bicarbonate soda and white vinegar. Let it sit for an hour and your jewellery will look as good as new! "This method does work and is not abrasive like some other alternatives," says Ella. "With this being said, I would still opt for the fairy liquid method, as not only is it a much quicker method, but it's also way more convenient. However, if you want to try a different non-abrasive method, this would be the next best option."

There you have it, the best and worst ways to care for your jewellery this spring. Why not give some a try and add spring to your step and sparkles to your fingers.
