We interviewed local hair and make-up artist Laura Glanville from Wishbone & Comb to find out more about her business.
Tell us about your background – how did you become a hair and make-up artist?
I have been a hairdresser and beautician for 20 years. I started my career studying beauty therapy in Swansea, then went on to do a hairdressing apprenticeship in Cardiff. My passion for hair and make-up grew when I worked on my first wedding a few years later. I soon found that I got a real buzz from working with bridal parties on the morning of their big day and I wanted to specialise and grow my experience in this field. This is when Wishbone & Comb was born! As we have grown throughout the years, I have managed to expand the team and the area that we cover. We are now a fantastic team of 15 hair stylists and make- up artists who travel to venues across South Wales and the South West of England, creating flawless bridal make-up and show-stopping bridal hair.
What should couples expect when booking your services?
When a bride chooses to book with us, they will be looked after throughout the booking process by myself and my fantastic team. With many years of experience in the bridal industry, I have everything down to a fine art; nothing is left to chance and my organisation and attention to detail are second to none. My brides often say that it feels as if they have their very own wedding planner for hair and make-up!
What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why?
One particular wedding that always stands out was at Usk Castle. It was a Viking-inspired wedding where all of the guests were dressed up in Viking outfits. The bride and groom had hired period costumes and displayed them in a separate room for all of their guests to pick from on the day. The bride had a green velvet Gothic period gown with bell sleeves. Her hairstyle was a long braided fishtail adorned with dried flowers; her make-up was kept quite simple and she had gold hues throughout to complement her beautiful gown.

How long before the big day should couples book your services?
We start taking bookings up to 15 months in advance, as I find that couples often start looking to book around that time.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
We love nothing more than personalising your hair and make-up to tie in with your wedding and we will often ask about your dress and colour schemes to ensure we are on the same page and can create your dream bridal vision. Some of my favourite looks have been from alternative weddings and I have also worked on some really fantastic themed celebrations.
Do you have any top tips for brides-to-be looking for a hair and make-up artist?
Do a little research before finding your wedding hair and make-up artist; take a look at reviews and their previous work. Enquire early, but wait until you have secured your date and venue, as these are two of the main details that will depend on our availability.
What hair and make-up trends do you think will be popular in 2024?
We have seen more old Hollywood glamour and vintage hair requests recently, although last year the boho braided styles were still in high demand for brides and bridal parties alike. I think this year we will see more sleek bun hairstyles. These are ideal for long tresses, keeping your hair tamed and your neck cool, especially in the summer months. In recent years, the most requested bridal make-up look has been a soft glam with earthy and bronzed neutral tones and warm, glowing skin. I think in 2024 this will not change dramatically; however, we will see more rosy blush tones used within bridal make-up looks.
